Dr. Demetris STATHAKIS is an assistant professor at the department of Planning and Regional Development (PRD) of the University of Thessaly (Volos). He graduated and obtained his doctorate degree from PRD (1994 and 2003 respectively). He holds the MSc in Geodetic and Geographical Information Systems (University College London, 1995). He served as a researcher (2004-8) at the Joint Research Center of the European Commission (Ispra) on geographical information systems and remote sensing for the protection and security of the citizen (IPSC). He has extensive research experience on computational intelligence, i.e. on the synergy of neural networks, fuzzy sets and genetic algorithms. Published 9 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. Serves as a reviewer in 7 top ranked scientific journals. Member of the managing board of two professional bodies related to spatial planning and GIS.
